Quick tips for sharper analysis

Film from the side
Position your phone at a 90° angle to your athlete — this gives the AI the clearest view of arm path, hip rotation, and stride mechanics. About 15–25 feet away is ideal.
Light matters
Outdoors in daylight is the easiest setup. If you're indoors, make sure the athlete isn't backlit by a bright window. Even lighting lets the skeleton overlay track more precisely.
Record multiple reps
The more motion the AI sees, the more consistent the cue becomes. 5–10 reps per session is plenty. You'll see patterns emerge that even the first rep might not fully capture.
Show the overlay to your athlete
The skeleton playback is one of the most powerful coaching moments in the app. Let your athlete watch themselves in the pose overlay — most athletes make the fix faster when they can see it themselves.

Answered before you even have to ask

Coach gets the guided, tap-to-record flow built for lessons. Athlete gets a fully hands-free, voice-triggered practice session — say "Hey Coach, record" and get spoken feedback after every rep, no one else needed. Parent is built around supporting an athlete's development. Pick one on first launch, and switch anytime from Settings → Switch Role — your history carries over.
No. Recording, the pose skeleton overlay, and session saving all work completely offline. The AI coaching cue generation does briefly connect to the internet when you tap "Generate Cue" — but you can connect to your phone's mobile data for that if there's no wifi. The actual recording works anywhere.
CoachPose uses the same underlying pose-detection technology used in professional sports broadcast systems. It tracks 33 body points at 30 frames per second. That said, it's a coaching tool, not a medical instrument — it's best used alongside your judgment, not as a replacement for it. The cues are meant to give you a concrete starting point, which you then validate with your expertise and eye.
Yes. There's a "Left-handed" toggle on the recording screen. Flip it on and the AI analysis is automatically adjusted to analyze from a left-handed perspective. The coaching cues will reference the correct arm, hip, and follow-through accordingly. Same experience, mirrored intelligently.
Absolutely. Many coaches find it most valuable for youth athletes precisely because kids' mechanics are developing — catching bad habits early makes a huge difference. The skeleton overlay is also a fantastic teaching tool for younger athletes who respond well to seeing rather than hearing. For privacy, no athlete data is ever uploaded or stored in the cloud.
All video and session data is stored locally on your device. Nothing is automatically uploaded to any server. When you generate an AI cue, only anonymized pose data (not the video itself) is used to produce the cue. You're always in control of your athletes' recordings.
Wake-word detection for "Hey Coach" runs entirely on-device — your voice is never recorded, streamed, or sent anywhere, just listened for locally and discarded. Before it ever activates, you'll see a clear, one-time consent screen explaining exactly what it does. You can always fall back to the manual record button instead.
Yes, with one caveat: lighting. CoachPose works great indoors as long as there's reasonable, even lighting — the kind you'd find in a well-lit batting cage or indoor facility. Avoid filming when the athlete is silhouetted against a bright background (like a window or open door), as this makes it harder for the AI to detect the skeleton clearly.
CoachPose supports multiple AI providers for coaching cue generation — including Claude, OpenAI (GPT), and Google Gemini. You can configure which provider to use in Settings. If you have an API key from any of these providers, you can use it directly in the app for an even more personalized coaching cue experience.
